Responses To Media Products - TV Show

I have been asked to analyse and deconstruct a media product. I have decided to look at the Sherlock TV series.

The first point I will look at is what makes the TV show that is familiar from the original Sherlock novels. In the Sherlock TV series they have brought the show into modern times which changes a few things. First of all in the modern adaptation they get around in modern taxis whereas in the classic novels and old programs they would use a horse and carriage.

Also one famous place in the Sherlock is 221 B Baker Street. This is where Sherlock lives. This is always featured in most episodes of the TV series and the novels when Watson meets Sherlock for work on cases.

Additionally Sherlock's outfit has been changed because his old outfit would be out style for the modern times. Some of the items they got rid of was the hat and his pipe and made it look practical for the show.

The next point I will look at are the codes and conventions of Sherlock. Sherlock was produced by the BBC. This means the BBC have to follow certain rules such as the watershed, copyright and their own guidelines for drama. When it comes to copyright the BBC would have to look at if the copyright was expired in order to make the series in the first place. When it comes to the watershed the BBC would have to choose a time to put it on because of content that episodes could have.

Now I will talk about the Mise en scene of Sherlock. First I will talk about the setting of Sherlock. Most of Sherlock uses a lighter setting but there are times where it can be dark and very suspenseful in scenes such as the pool scene in series 1 episode 3 "The Great Game".

The lighting, the setting create suspenseful scene. An example of a scene in Sherlock that is funny is this one of Sherlock coming back to 221B covered in blood with a harpoon and the reaction of John is very funny because the lighting makes the scene bright.

I will now look at the narritive structure of Sherlock. Every episode of Sherlock is about 80-90 minutes. This means they can have a contained plot in every episode but have an overarching plot throughout the series. In series 1 the overarching plot was the threat of Moriarty. He was teased throughout the series until his reveal in episode 3.

Finally I will talk about representation of the characters in the show. With bringing Sherlock into the modern times the people behind the show would have to change a few things with the characters but keep some things the same such as the genders of all the main characters are the same. One thing they ould have changed are the stereotypes because of the changing times some stereotypes would not be in modern times such as most poor kids would not be on the street like they were in older times. Also woman wouldn't have important roles back in older times when Sherlock was set compared to modern times.
